DAs: "Do as we say, not as we used to do."

We have to hand it to the district attorneys – they’re certainly not lacking in boldness.

Three of them – DAs Conley, Leone, and O’Keefe – admitted to the Boston Globe recently that they, like countless other Bay Staters, have used marijuana at some point in their life.

So what distinguishes them from the 7,500 Massachusetts residents arrested every year for low-level possession offenses? Nothing except that they didn’t get caught.

Herald hilarity

So let’s get this straight: Boston Mayor Menino and the Boston Police Department (BPD) spokesperson are shocked – shocked – that our TV ads featuring retired police officers include 20-year-old pictures of them in uniform. The Herald approvingly reports on their outrage:

"Boston cops and Mayor Thomas M. Menino are up in arms that pictures of two uniformed officers and a marked cruiser appear in new political ads supporting a controversial proposal to decriminalize marijuana."

Uniformed officers campaigning! How outrageous! Surely this isn’t something their side would ever engage in ...

Opposition gets free press; points out that some cops support Question 2

Straight-Up Lies: Opponents Of Marijuana Policy Reform Go Off The Deep End In Massachusetts

[Note: Cross-posted from FireDogLake]

It’s not exactly news when opponents of marijuana policy reform lie. In fact, it would surprise a lot of us if they suddenly began engaging in honest debate. But in Massachusetts, the opponents of Question 2 have gone off the deep end. And more disturbingly, they’ve now aligned themselves with a notorious out-of-state group that is shadowed by allegations of child abuse.

The Boston Herald: A case study in yellow journalism

In a surprise to exactly no one, the Boston Herald came out against Question 2 today. In fact, given the degree of blatant bias that’s underwritten every single story the Herald has published on the issue, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this paragon of journalistic integrity had already editorialized against Question 2.

The editors begin today’s 357-word campaign of misdirection by alleging that “[s]upporters of Question 2 get very prickly when anyone suggests their effort to decriminalize possession of a small amount of marijuana has anything to do with legalizing pot use.” The implication here is that the diligent reporters at the Herald have innocently asked simple questions – just doing their jobs – while we and others have been elusive on the issue.

Really, now? Let’s rewind.
