The Committee for Sensible Marijuana Policy (CSMP) is working to get an initiative on the 2008 Massachusetts ballot that will decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. I am supporting CSMP and I would love for you to join me!
The proposed initiative will create a civil penalty system under which the possession of an ounce or less of marijuana will be punishable by a $100 fine. All other laws relating to marijuana -- including selling, growing, trafficking, and driving or working under the influence -- will remain the same. By removing the possibility of arrest and jail for simple possession of small amounts of marijuana, the initiative will save local police departments $29.5 million a year, money that could be better used fighting violent crime. Additionally, the initiative will end the creation of criminal records, or CORI’s, for the 7,500 Massachusetts residents arrested every year. It will also do away with the collateral sanctions that can result from such arrests – including bans on school loans, the inability to find work or housing, and the inability to get professional licenses in the future.
The campaign must collect 140,000 signatures in a two-stage process by mid-June 2008 to get the initiative on the ballot. Then this summer, CSMP will begin the actual campaign by working with Massachusetts voters and communities to ensure the passage of this socially smart and fiscally responsible measure. I hope that you will join me and the CSMP team and get involved today!
